Stipulation of limiting values for the smoke development of cables
In 2001 a research project, ordered by the German Institute for Constructional Engineering for the determination of limiting values for the smoke development of cables was completed in the MPA NRW. Besides the leading MPA NRW, the test centres IBMB Braunschweig and the Material Testing Authority Dresden also participated.
The reason for this research project was that electric cables complying with building material class B1 according to DIN 4102-1 and showing a low smoke development may be installed in certain hallways. However, the standard DIN 4102-1 does not contain any limiting values for the classification of low smoke development.
As a result of the research project the proposal was made to stipulate a limiting value of 100 % x min for fire tests conducted in the fire shaft according to DIN 4102-15 for cables with low smoke development. This suggestion was supported by the committee of experts for the fire behaviour of building materials of the German Institute for Constructional Engineering and has meanwhile been considered when granting general technical approvals for cables.
